General FAQ

Which programmes are included in the Hilfsprogramm Tanz dance support programme?
The €20 million Hilfsprogramm Tanz support programme for the German dance scene has been aligned with existing and new federal and state government funding initiatives in such a way that the programmes complement one another but avoid overcompensation. The concept envisages the implementation of three pillars: TANZPAKT RECONNECT to strengthen dance structures and secure them for the future, DIS-TANZEN as a funding programme for self-employed dance professionals and as stimulus funding for dance schools and dance education in cultural institutions and STEPPING OUT to promote the development, production and distribution of dance in new spaces. Applicants may not apply for funding from more than one of the programmes for the same project.

What is the aim of DIS-TANZEN?
Through the DIS-TANZEN support programme, the Dachverband Tanz Deutschland e.V. is supporting the restart of artistic and dance education activities during the COVID-19 crisis, with a particular emphasis on the development and testing of new forms of artistic work and dance education. DIS-TANZEN is aimed at strengthening individual dance professionals in the future and facilitating the development of innovative examples and models for the entire dance scene.

What is the volume of the DIS-TANZEN programme?
DIS-TANZEN has a total funding volume of around 10 million euros.

Who is eligible to apply?
DIS-TANZ-SOLO
is aimed at freelance dance professionals: choreographers, dancers, dramaturges, producers, curators, technicians, dance mediators, dance teachers and other freelancers who are involved in artistic and educational processes in a professional capacity. DIS-TANZ-IMPULS is a support programme for dance schools and cultural institutions offering dance education. Natural and legal persons are eligible to apply. Applicants must be residents of Germany.

Where can I apply for DIS-TANZEN funds?
Applications may only be submitted online via the www.dis-tanzen.de website under "Application".

Who reviews the applications?
Applications are reviewed by the staff of the Dachverband Tanz Deutschland office.

Who decides which applications will be successful?
Applications will be evaluated by an independent jury.

Where can I apply for TANZPAKT RECONNECT funding?

Where can I apply for NPN – STEPPING OUT funding?
Click here to apply to NPN – NATIONALES PERFORMANCE NETZ, JOINT ADVENTURES for NPN – STEPPING OUT funding.

I applied for emergency aid and have already received funding. Can I still apply?
Yes, you may still apply for DIS-TANZEN funding even if you have already received emergency aid or assistance from other funding programmes. It is important to note, however, that different grants cannot be used to cover the same expenses.

Can I apply for DIS-TANZEN funding and, simultaneously apply jointly with colleagues, for TANZPAKT RECONNECT and NPN – STEPPING OUT funding?
In principle, it is possible to apply to several dance support programmes. However, different funding programmes cannot be used to fund the same project (proposal or measures); i.e. an application for a separate project must be submitted to each funding programme.

What does "vorzeitiger Maßnahmenbeginn” (early implementation of measures) mean?
Work may only begin on a project that has been granted funding after receipt of the funding agreement, i.e. the grant may only be used after the funding agreement has been finalized. If there are exceptional and important reasons as to why part of the funding should be used prior to this date, e.g. because the rent for the dance school space is due in advance, permission may be sought for the early implementation of measures.

How can I request permission to start work early?
In order to do so, you must check Yes to "vorzeitiger Maßnahmenbeginn" (early implementation of measures) (under the menu item "Erklärungen" (Declarations).

Can I submit documents in a language other than German?
You may also complete your application for DIS-TANZ-SOLO funding in English (although the form itself is currently only available in German).

Can I resubmit a (rejected) application?
In principle, rejected applications from the first funding round may be resubmitted.

Is there any legal entitlement to funding?
There is no legal entitlement to funding from Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.

DIS-TANZ-SOLO

By when do I have to submit my application?
The application deadline for the first round of funding of the DIS-TANZ-SOLO programme is 24 August, 2020. The second and third application deadlines will be announced on the website over the coming months.

How many application rounds will there be?

When is the earliest possible project start date?
Funding cannot be granted if the project has already started prior to the jury session or if expenses have been paid or contracts concluded prior to this date. The earliest possible project start date for projects in the first funding round is the date on which you receive notification of a positive jury decision (presumably 1 October 2020). It is possible to implement measures for a project early; see the question about early implementation of measures in the General FAQ section.

When does my project have to be completed?
The funding period for the first application round ends on 31 August 2021.

Is there a minimum project duration?
As a rule, the duration of the proposed project should be at least three months.

Is there a maximum project duration?
The duration of the proposed project must not be longer than nine months.

When will the funds be paid out?
After the start of the project, the funds will be paid transferred retrospectively for each previous 6-week period.

What documents do I have to submit?
All documents that must be submitted with the application are specified on the application form.

Do I have to submit a budget for my project?
No, the information listed on the application form (duration and monthly amount) is sufficient for the DIS-TANZ-SOLO programme application.

What is meant by "maßgeblichen Beteiligung an einer künstlerischen Tanzproduktion" (significant participation in an artistic dance production)?
The aim of DIS-TANZEN is to support the restarting of professional artistic activity. In this context, "significant participation" refers to participation in dance productions in a professional capacity, i.e. the exercising of an activity that is relevant to the realization of the production. Such participation may take the form of artistic, educational, organisational or technical activities. The nature of the participation must be evident from the documents submitted with the application.

I have been both self-employed and employed over the past two years. Can I still apply for funding?
Although applicants must generally have been self-employed for at least two years to be eligible for DIS-TANZ-SOLO funding, individuals who are both self-employed and employed may also apply. Currently and during the funding period, individuals receiving funding may not derive more than 50% of their income from an employment relationship. The jury is responsible for reviewing each application and making a decision accordingly.

Can I apply for funding if I am a self-employed dance teacher?
Yes, you can if you can show that you also participate in artistic dance productions. If you would like to apply as a representative of a dance school, however, please apply for DIS-TANZ-IMPULS funding. Likewise, you may also submit a joint application for the DIS-TANZ-IMPULS programme with a dance school at which you teach and include your fee in the expenses for the project.

How much funding can I apply for?
Funding may amount to €500, €1,000 or €1,500 per month. The project duration, i.e. the number of months, can be between three and nine months. However, the total funding amount must not be less than €4,500 or more than €13,500.

What are examples of projects/undertakings that I can implement using DIS-TANZ-SOLO funds?
You can find some project examples here.

Can I use the grant to research a future production?
Yes, the funds may also be used to carry out research for a production.

Can I use the money to hire someone to complete the project?
No, the funding is intended to cover your own work on your project.

Can I use the funding to commission other people to carry out certain paid activities as part of my project?
The funding is to be used as income for your work on the project. If you involve other people, they must be paid using your own resources.

How do I calculate my monthly workload?
Please think about your monthly workload for your project.
Would you like to work part time (approximately 1/3 of your time) (€500), mostly (approximately 2/3 of your time) (€1,000) or mainly (almost all of your time) (€1,500) on the proposed project during the funding period? Please briefly touch upon your expected workload when describing the project.

How do I calculate my funding amount?
If you apply for monthly funding of €500, the funding period must be nine months, since the minimum funding amount is €4,500 (€500 monthly funding x 9 months = €4,500).
If you apply for monthly funding of €1,000, the funding period can range from five to nine months (€1,000 monthly funding x 5 months = €5,000 or €1,000 monthly funding x 9 months =€9,000).
If you apply for monthly funding of €1,500, the funding period can range from three to nine months (€1,500 monthly funding x 3 months = €4,500 (minimum funding amount) or €1,500 monthly funding x 9 months = €13,500 (maximum funding amount)).

Which documents must I submit at the end of the funding period?
You will have to submit a report detailing the progress and success of your project (approximately 1-2 pages).

Must I document my project?
We would like all funding recipients to document their projects in a manner that is appropriate to the respective art form. We want to use the many projects we support as an opportunity to share successful approaches, exciting projects that may inspire others, and results that may become the starting point for new ideas. For this purpose, the Dachverband Tanz will set up a platform for exchange and invite funding recipients as well as other dance professionals to share their work processes and results.

By when must I submit the evidence/documentation?
Process descriptions may be submitted during the project in the form of a project diary. The final report must be submitted no later than two months after completion of the project.

Criteria include your previous professional work and the description of your proposed project.

When will the jury's decisions be announced?
The decisions are expected to be announced by the beginning of October.

Will rejections also be communicated?
Yes, applicants who will not receive funding will also be informed accordingly.

You can find contact information for the DIS-TANZEN programme here.

DIS-TANZ-IMPULS

Who will receive funding?
The support programme is aimed at dance and ballet schools as well as cultural institutions offering dance education. DIS-TANZEN does not limit the term "dance schools" to schools for ballroom dancing but includes schools and offerings for all types and styles of dance. The school or institution must be financed primarily (at least 50%) from non-public funds and revenue.

By when do I have to submit my application?
The first application deadline for DIS-TANZ-IMPULS funding is 7 September 2020.

What can I apply for?
In your application you will describe a measure. By this we mean any undertaking to strengthen and reorganise your school or dance education offerings (you can find examples here). Although the funding provided may not be used to cover past costs, you may use the additional funds to finance measures to reorganise your school/offerings by the middle of next year.
The funding takes the form of project funding for which you will need to submit a description, a budget and other documents about your school or institution.

How many application rounds will there be?
There will be two application rounds for the DIS-TANZ-IMPULS programme. The second call for applications will be announced on the website over the coming months.

Will the funding volume be the same in every application round?
Yes, the total funding volume will be distributed almost equally across the two application rounds.

When is the earliest possible start date?
Funding cannot be granted if the project has already started prior to the jury session or if expenses have been paid or contracts concluded prior to this date. The earliest possible project start date for projects in the first funding round is the date on which you receive notification of a positive jury decision. This is expected to be 15 October 2020. It is possible to implement measures for a project early; see the question about early implementation of measures in the General FAQ section.

When does my project have to be completed?
The funding period for the first round ends on 31 August 2021.

Is there a minimum duration for the measures?
As a rule, the duration of the proposed measures should be at least three months.

Who decides which applications will be successful?
Applications will be evaluated by an independent jury which also includes dance school association representatives, dance educators and dance mediators.

What criteria will be used to decide which applications will be successful?
The jury will evaluate the presentation of previous work or the profile, the description of the measures and the plausibility of the budget.

When will the jury's decisions be announced?
The decisions are expected to be announced by mid-October.

What do I have to consider if I am chosen to receive funding?
First you will be informed that the jury has decided to award you funding. If you indicated in your application that you would like to start implementing your proposed measures immediately after receiving this information, we will also send you our consent to do so.
You will then receive a funding agreement from us. This agreement specifies how the funds may be used, what must be considered in the event of changes over the course of the measures and how you must document the use of the funds. Since you will be receiving federal funding, a number of rules must be observed when using these funds. You must agree to abide by these rules as part of the funding agreement.
To receive the funding, you will have to set up a dedicated account through which all receipts and expenses will be processed. This will simplify the proof of funding for you.

When will the funds be paid out?
The funding amounts will be paid upon request (also known as drawdown) in such a way that they cover any costs that have already arisen as a result of the measures or that will need to be paid in the following 6 weeks. Recipients must send the respective payment requests to the Dachverband Tanz to this end.

I own a small dance school that has only been open for a year. Can I still apply?
You may cooperate with another school that has been in operation for longer and is willing to submit the joint application to seek funding for your measures. In certain exceptional cases, a school that has not been operating for a full two years may also receive funding. The decision lies with the jury.

I do not have my own dance school but I work independently as a dance teacher for various dance schools. Can I still apply?
You can ask a dance school for which you work to submit an application and include your fees as part of the proposed measures. Under certain circumstances, you can apply for DIS-TANZ-SOLO funds as a dance mediator or dance teacher if you can provide proof of your involvement in artistic dance productions.

What documents do I have to submit?
All documents that must be submitted with the application are specified on the application form.

What do I have to consider when drawing up a budget?
You can find a guide to creating a budget here.

Where can I find the budget template?
You can find the downloadable template here.

What do I need to consider when receiving funding?
The DIS-TANZ-IMPULS funding will be granted to the body responsible for the project in the form of a fixed amount. The expenses estimated in the budget will be covered up to the approved funding amount. In accordance with the BKM funding principles, only those expenses that arise directly from the project are considered eligible. The person responsible for the project, i.e. you as the recipient of the funds, undertakes to use the funds economically and exclusively for the purposes of the proposed measures. The measures will not be fully funded; recipients must contribute 10% of their own funds or third-party funds (donations, sponsorship, other funding).

Do I have to sell the equipment that I have purchased as part of the DIS-TANZ-IMPULS funding after the end of the funding period?
No, that will not be necessary. Any equipment purchased remains the property of the recipients. Please also see the ANBest-P (General ancillary provisions for project grants).

Do I have to observe certain regulations when using the money?
Yes, the use of public funds is subject to certain regulations. You can find an overview in the Allgemeine Nebenbestimmungen für Projekte (ANBest-P, General ancillary provisions for project grants). Recipients must agree to comply with these regulations as part of the funding agreement.

Which documents must I submit at the end of the funding period?
It may be necessary to submit an interim report during the implementation of the measures. After completion of the project, you will generally have to submit a report (approximately 1-2 pages) detailing the progress and success of your measures. You should document the expenses and receipts (separately and in chronological order) by making a list corresponding to the budget structure and by providing a table detailing all receipts and expenses.

Must I document my measures?
We want to use the many measures developed by schools and dance educational institutions as an opportunity to share successful approaches, exciting projects that may inspire others, and results that may become the starting point for new ideas. For this purpose, the Dachverband Tanz will set up a platform for exchange and invite funding recipients as well as other dance professionals and dance institutions to share their work processes and results.

By when must I submit the documents and the report?
The documents must be submitted no later than two months after completion of the measures or after the end of the funding period.
